Ten Inspiring Happiness Quotes to Make You Smile

Are you looking for some inspiring happiness quotes to brighten your day?

Do you know someone who needs a quick mood boost?

You’ve come to the right place. Happiness is important because moods are highly contagious. In this post, I share ten of my favorite happiness quotes and a free resource to help you be happier now. Then boost your attitude and brighten the mood of others.

A Happiness Experiment

Before diving into the ten inspiring happiness quotes, would you try a quick experiment with me?

First, think of the happiest person you know. Now, examine your own mood. Did your countenance brighten as you focused on this happy person? For most people, simply imagining being around a cheerful friend is enough to brighten their day.

As a therapist, I can attest to just how valuable happiness is. Approximately one out of every ten Americans struggles with depression. Yet, this is only the beginning. Far more people wander through life half-awake. They are going through the motions, doing the best they know how, but still taking things one day at a time. Life is meant to be so much more than simply getting by. And happiness, your happiness, can help other people accomplish this. If you don’t believe me, consider the following:

  • Happy people have more fun.
  • Joyful people are more effective parents, leaders, co-works, students, Christ-followers, and friends.
  • Your happiness matters because you matter.
  • Happiness is important because moods are contagious. Your attitude rubs off on everyone around you.

The simple act of smiling and a word of encouragement is more significant than we realize. These acts have the power to brighten someone’s day. Yet, happiness must start with us because we cannot give to others that which we do not possess ourselves.

This is why I compiled a list of my top ten favorite happiness quotes. My hope is that these happy quotes inspire you. After you finish reading them, pass them on, and brighten someone else’s day. Happiness is even better when it is shared with a friend.

So take a minute to brew a fresh cup of coffee–or other favorite beverage. Then, sit back, relax, and be happy right now!

  1. I concur with all of the above, Jed. In fact, while my whole book, “The Best Advice So Far,” centers on the idea, I devote a whole chapter to this statement: “Happiness is a choice.”

The thing is, for people who aren’t happy — and maybe can’t even remember the last time they truly were — it’s hard to start. Often, when they think of happy people in their lives, they become even more negative or sad: “Why can’t I be more like that person? Why is my life so bad? What’s wrong with me?” Reading positive quotes can also feel like salt in a wound, met with a feeling that those things are “easy for other people to say, when their lives aren’t like mine.”

Still — happiness IS a choice. Granted, it is a HARD choice sometimes, but it is nonetheless a choice. A carefree live of ease, financial security, loving family — those are not foundational to happiness.

So what do you do? Where do you start, if you don’t feel any happier thinking about the happy people around you or reading positive quotes? If you don’t know how to be the type of person who spreads happiness to others?

The very first thing to do … is to do SOMETHING. And that usually starts by admitting it out loud to someone: “I’m not a happy person, but I want to be.” Tell a trusted, positive friend who will talk constructively with you rather than commiserating. Seek out a solid counselor you click with (which may not be the first one you meet; and don’t give up on counseling because you didn’t click with the “last person”). If you have roots in faith, consider talking to a member of your clergy. But do SOMETHING. Tell SOMEONE. You’ll be surprised where one small step can lead you.

    1. I love that line “I’m not a happy person but want to be.” Acknowledging where we are at, and where we want to head, is a great first step in being happier. I love all the wisdom and insights you have Erik! Great advice in regards to counselors (and even life-coaches and mentors too). It can take time to find supports that we click with–I learned this from personal experience 🙂 Great encouragement to keep searching and maybe even interview or test-drive a few counselors / mentors in order to see who you best click with. Awesome addition and insights!
