How to be Thankful: 101 Things to Be Thankful For

In college, I purchased a book entitled 14,000 Things to Be Happy About as a birthday gift for a friend. I enjoyed browsing through the pages before giving it away. This isn’t the type of book that is read straight through. There is no story. Just a list of14,000 things to be thankful for, in bullet-point format. It’s a powerful tool for brightening one’s day. If you’re wondering how to be thankful, I’ve learned that the more we practice gratitude, the more our gratitude grows.

As a therapist, I’ve spent a significant amount of time with families who are discouraged. One of my favorite questions to ask is, “What’s going well?” I like this question because everyone I have ever met, no matter how bleak the circumstances, has something to be thankful for. The trick is to find it. Momentum builds quickly, and the mood in the room lifts when someone realizes just how many positive things they have going for them.

Jumpstarting Happiness

Finding positives in our life, thanking God for them, and making these things the center of our attention is a great way to jumpstart our own happiness. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

The more you and I focus on God’s blessings, the more our faith in Him grows! This post contains 101 things that I am thankful for. I’m certain that you and I have much in common and that you will be thankful for many of these things too. You can use this list to jump-start your happiness when you are stuck in a rut and add additional things that you are thankful for in the comments at the end.

The more we practice gratefulness, the more our gratitude grows. Most of the items listed are simple pleasures of life. For fun, I’ve included relevant Scriptures and the occasional side note too. Because of who Jesus is, you and I always have a reason to be thankful!

101 Things to be Thankful For:

  1. Salvation through Jesus Christ.
    • 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
  2. Forgiveness.
    • Psalm 103:2 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
  3. God’s grace.
    • 2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
  4. Being loved by God.
    • John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son
  5. Being a child of God.
    • 1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God
  6. Family.
  7. Friends.
  8. God’s word.
  9. The hope of heaven.
  10. Laughter.
  11. Children.
  12. The freedom to laugh at ourselves.
  13. Hiking.
  14. Clean water.
  15. An incredible wife who loves me.
  16. A good book.
  17. Shoes.
  18. A home.
  19. The sun shining.
  20. The rain falling.
  21. The chill of winter.
  22. The beach.
  23. Access to good medicine when I’m sick.
  24. Wise and knowledgeable doctors when my children are sick.
  25. Toothpaste.
  26. Blogging friends who cheer me on.
  27. Ocean waves.
  28. Strong coffee.
  29. The smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning.
  30. Trail-mix.
  31. Sriracha Sauce–Because it makes everything taste better.
  32. My smartphone.
  33. A car.
  34. Mt. biking.
  35. The feeling I get when I walk through the door and hear all three of my children squeal, “Daddy’s home!”
  36. Camping.
  37. Pick-nicks in the park.
  38. My job.
  39. Church.
  40. Worship.
  41. My blended family–In case you haven’t heard, I strongly believe that God loves blended families!
  42. A bed to sleep in.
  43. Watching my one-year-old daughter swing.
  44. Christmas.
  45. Christmas cards.
  46. The many freedoms that come with living in the United States.
  47. Fresh-picked apples.
  48. Orange-juice.
  49. A college education.
  50. The privileged of teaching others.
  51. Friends with the gift of sarcasm, who help me laugh at some of the ridiculous messes I get myself into.
  52. Color–I remember reading The Giver in high school and thinking about how dreary a world without color would be.
  53. Flip-flops.
  54. Hoodie sweaters.
  55. Blue Jeans.
  56. Early morning writing times.
  57. Sunset walks on the beach.
  58. Bare feet in the sand.
  59. Ocean waves.
  60. Readers who are kind enough to share my writing.
  61. WordPress–I hear it’s much more user-friendly than previous blogging tools.
  62. Weekends.
  63. Saturday pancakes.
  64. Cooking with my daughters.

  66. A working kitchen sink–Ours went out a few weeks ago. It’s one of those simple pleasures that I forgot mattered until it broke. I’m incredibly grateful that ours is working again 🙂

  97. Sky-diving–It’s been a long time, but it’s also among my favorite memories!

Writing out 101 things I’m thankful for was more difficult than I expected. Gratitude, like a muscle, grows with use. It’s likely that I need to exercise my thankfulness more often. How about you.   3. What an enjoyable post! It is so true, we all have something we can be thankful for. At times, we just need to take the time to look for it. And then be thankful! Glad we were neighbors at Inspire Me Monday this morning!

  4. This is a great list Jed. I was reading up on praying with a 2 year old and ran across an interesting story about how the parents eyes were opened up to what a child sees. The child would list the each individual toy, their nose, eyes and many other things that we normally overlook and take for granted. Though we forget that we are guest in a foreign land that have been charged with its care. We should be thankful for the opportunity and the work we have been given.

    When I do this exercise daily I also try to dig down deep. I actually write three things out I’m thankful for. Who helped me? Why this happened? What this means to me? How can I replicate this? How did I contribute?

    This little exercise has also helped me in my relationships because not only am I thankful but it allows me to express why I’m thankful, so that people really understand their contributions and how they helped me.

  6. Such a great list! I agree with you on so many–and I am also a Sriracha lover. I also agree that God loves blended families. I have a daughter from a previous marriage, and my husband and I have 4 other children, and I am so thankful that he loves my daughter the same way he loves all of the kids that are technically “his”.

  8. This is an exercise that practice daily…especially during the times when I feel down or am going through a difficult circumstance. Philippians 4:8 is my “go-to” verse for just such times! When we focus on God and all things good, our troubles start to shrink in size.

    When I take time to make lists like this I tend to dig down deeper, too. I also like to keep my list around for when circumstances are hard and I find myself in a season of ick.

    This practice of actually acknowledging what we are blessed to have received is such an important aspect of our faith journey. For if we lose our gratitude for the small how can we ever be thankful for more and bigger? 🙂
